The Role


As a Naval Construction Engineer, your job encompasses the management of capital works and maintenance projects covering all aspects of property, land and construction. You will manage various personnel and projects that are required by the Defence Force. The Navy is a great place for you to consolidate the training you will have received at University, and gain valuable experience in construction and project management.

There is no requirement for you to go to sea; however there are opportunities to travel overseas. Exchanges are possible with counterparts of other Navies, and you may travel to the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.


Career Progression

After completing Junior Officer Common Training, you will be promoted to Sub Lieutenant, and be posted to Joint Logistics Support Organisation. Here you will carry out the general duties of a Construction Engineer. After you complete the Divisional Officer Leadership Course, you may also be responsible for a division of Sailors, managing their career, welfare and discipline. When you have completed the Incident Managers course at the Damage Control School, and completed the necessary time in rank you will be promoted to Lieutenant. Additional postings ashore and the opportunity for a peacekeeping role overseas will be available.

Pay & Benefit Details


Your initial remuneration will be based on previous experience and skill level. This is negotiated on a case by case basis. As your career continues, remuneration will increase on promotion and seniority.

General Requirements


  • Be a minimum of 17 years of age.

  • Be a NZ citizen or have permanent residency and have lived in NZ for five years.

  • Be of good character – assessed by study of testimonials and a police record check.

  • Be free of any criminal convictions for the previous two years.

Educational Requirements


  • Have completed at least three years of secondary education.

  • Have completed a Civil Engineering Degree.

Fitness Requirements


Be medically fit for service.

Training


Basic Training

Upon successful enlistment into the Navy you’ll be posted to Devonport Navy base in Auckland. Here you will do 13 weeks of basic military training to find out if you’ve got what it takes to be in the Navy, and learn various subjects including:

  • Teamwork/team support

  • Naval discipline and regulations

  • Physical fitness

  • Parade training.
