As an Air Force Psychologist, you’ll play a vital role performing a range of specialist personnel tasks and conducting research for general military use. It’s a demanding career both professionally and in terms of leadership.

Salary after one year: Remuneration on enlistment $31,894 - This is the minimum remuneration you will be paid from day one (Your actual salary is calculated on qualifications and relevant experience).

Joining age:  You must be 17 years or older


Qualifications: Masters Degree in Psychology, with an Industrial and Occupational background. Must be eligible for registration.


Nationality: Applicants must be a NZ citizen (some exceptions apply).

// FULL JOB DESCRIPTION

As an Air Force Psychologist, you’ll be employed as a Commissioned Specialist Military Officer. You will be involved in a broad range of organisational and military psychology activities. These range from providing recruitment advice to providing counselling services to Air Force staff and supporting operational deployments and peacekeeping activities. You’ll provide support and advice to Air Force commanders on psychological and organisational human resource matters and conduct a wide range of organisational research. You will also combine your professional career with the responsibilities of being an RNZAF officer.

This challenging role brings plenty of variety and excellent career prospects. After completing your training, you can progress from Flying Officer to the rank of Flight Lieutenant. As your career progresses, opportunities also exist to become a Squadron Leader or higher.

// TRAINING

Your career in the Air Force will begin with 21 weeks Initial Officer Training at RNZAF Base Woodbourne. You’ll then enter into your registration year, during which time further professional training is encouraged. You’ll be able to continue studies voluntarily or through sponsorship, and attend professional conferences such as the New Zealand Psychological Society Conference.

As well as professional courses, you will be required to complete a two-week Flight Commanders’ Course. You may also go on to attend staff courses at the New Zealand Defence Force Command and Staff College at Trentham Military Camp.
