Medical Officer

a medical officer conducting an eye exam.
The job of an RNZAF Medical Officer is very varied and no two days are the same.  Although the main thrust of the job is to provide primary care to the serving men and women of the RNZAF, as  a medical officer you will be required to develop skills and expertise in occupational medicine, accident and emergency medicine, aviation medicine, aeromedical evacuation and medical administration. Because the military recognises that the health of its members is important, your role will be to assess, treat and aggressively rehabilitate patients to ensure that they are fit for deployment. Fortunately you will not be alone in your endeavours as you will work as part of a team of other doctors, nurses, medics and physios.  Essentially you can focus on the clinical aspects of the job without the usual financial constraints or the distractions of running a general practice.

Category:
Salary after one year: Salary for Medical Officers is based upon relevant qualifications and experience. More detailed salary ranges can be advised by the RNZAF on request

Joining age: must be 17 years or older and met the qualification requirements

Qualifications:  Registration by the Medical Council of New Zealand

Nationality: Applicants must be a NZ citizen (some exceptions apply).

// FULL JOB DESCRIPTION

You will provide medical services to the Air Force and its personnel, including primary health care and pre-employment and pre-placement medical assessments. You will also develop and present a range of medical-related training packages and you may be deployed on operations or peacekeeping duties in support of other RNZAF units (such as in East Timor) or as part of a stand-alone medical unit (such as in Indonesia after the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami). As an officer, you’ll also be expected to undertake the full range of duties associated with military service.

You will be enlisted into the RNZAF as a commissioned officer and work at one of the RNZAF’s three bases – Auckland, Ohakea or Woodbourne. Collectively, Medical Officers are part of the RNZAF Medical Services, which is professionally controlled by the Director of Air Force Medicine.

// JOB BENEFITS

This is an interesting and varied role that has a strong focus on general practice, allowing you to spend more time with individual patients. You will work in a well equipped medical-flight with the opportunity to take part in the training of medics and aircrew in aviation medicine.
As a Medical Officer you will have control over individual patients’ rehabilitation through alterations in their workload and workplace and will have the support/co-operation of their immediate supervisor. There are fewer administrative distractions than in general practice.

There will be the opportunity for professional development and re-accreditation, with 10 days per year and up to $5,000 to be spent on professional development as well as overseas deployments. The Air Force pays for your annual practising certificate, membership to Med Association and other professional bodies as well as practice insurance.

// TRAINING

Your career in the Air Force will begin with 21 weeks Initial Officer Training at RNZAF Base Woodbourne. You will also be required to complete a two-week Flight Commander Course.

Further professional training is encouraged. You will be offered the opportunity to undergo a General Practitioner training programme, or other appropriate training programmes such as aviation medicine, occupational medicine, emergency medicine and sports medicine. As your career progresses, the opportunity exists for you to undertake further professional development through sponsored or voluntary study. Officers are sponsored to attend professional conferences on an annual basis.

// JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be registered by the Medical Council of New Zealand. (The Air Force will provide the required supervision for registration under the Fellowship of The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.)
