Tests And Interviews

The selection process includes pre-entry tests and interviews. It’s all part of making sure you’ve got what it takes to meet the challenges of an Air Force career. Make sure you spend time preparing for the test and interview so you can perform at your best on the day. The tips on this page will help you.

// RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Once your Recruiting Officer receives your application, you will be sent more information about your scheme and trade choice. At the same time, we'll let you know a date and time for you to come in to undergo a series of aptitude tests. For aircrew you will be tested on mathematics and spatial awareness. For other trades the tests will cover general reasoning, mathematics, English and information processing. Once you have passed these tests an interview will be arranged with your Recruiting Officer. At this stage you must bring with you the following: four passport-sized photographs, curriculum vitae, birth certificate, examination certificates, school reports, references and any other relevant information.

// TIPS ON TESTS

  • Revision of Year 11 Maths for ground trades and Year 12 Maths for aircrew is beneficial before sitting the pre-entry tests.
  • General spelling and reasoning revision is a good idea, along with reviewing general electrical and mechanical information for technical applicants.
  • Sit the practise tests and revise your weaker subjects. Preparation is the key.
  • Practise testing to a timeframe – remember test technique.
  • Get help from teachers or friends.
  • Allow plenty of time to get to the pre-entry testing and interview venues.

// INTERVIEW TIPS

  • Dress appropriately for interviews and testing sessions and be on time.
  • Prepare yourself with knowledge of your preferred trade choice and the RNZAF before the interview.
  • Prepare questions for the recruiter at your interview.
  • Check when the RNZAF is recruiting your preferred trade.
  • Consider an alternative trade choice in case your first option/preference is not available.
  • Demonstrate that you are applying after researching the military, your trade and the training required.
  • Give clear, concise and truthful answers – answer the question, don’t waffle.

Remember, all selection is in competition with other applicants. Your application will be received more favourably if you are enthusiastic and present well.
