As a Maintenance Fitter, you are responsible for maintaining and repairing the diverse range of mechanical and electrical equipment used by the New Zealand Army. From forklifts to NZLAVs to chainsaws, the variety and complexity of equipment you will be called upon to service is staggering.
Maintenance Fitter is a workshop trade and as such, during your apprenticeship you will be trained in the safe use of all of the tools you would find in New Zealand Army workshops.
From welders to lathes and all the hand tools you would expect. You will also learn how to diagnose faults and repair the vast array of equipment used by the New Zealand Army.
Maintenance Fitters are employed on a variety of overseas exercises and deployments in support of operational units and activities.
As your career progresses, you will continue to develop your skills, both at the Army's Trade Training School and at your place of work.he Royal New Zealand Army Logistics regiment (RNZALR).
The minimum remuneration you will be paid from day one is $31,894. Your remuneration will increase upon graduation of your recruit course to $40,646 and will continue to increase on promotion and seniority.
You must be at least 17 years of age.
You must be a NZ citizen (some exceptions apply).
You must be of good character – assessed by a study of testimonials and a police record check.
Driver's Licence: A Class 1 restricted driver's licence is recommended, but is not compulsory.
You must have completed at least three years at secondary school and have a proven ability in English, Maths and either Science, Physics, Chemistry, Graphics & Design or Applied Mathematics at NCEA Level 1 (12 credits per subject) or equivalent.
Upon successful enlistment into the Army you will be posted to Waiouru Army base. Here you will do 16 weeks of basic military training to find out if you have what it takes to be in the Army, and learn various subjects including:
• Organisation and Administration
• Army Customs and Protocol
• Drill and Parades
• Military Field Skills and Weapon Training
• First Aid
• Physical Fitness
Initial trade training is conducted at TTS, where you will be introduced to the Royal NZ Army Logistic Regiment. This course provides you with an insight into the Logistic Regiment and the part that you will play in the Army. The course duration is two weeks.
This four-month course is designed to give you basic knowledge and skills. Subjects include hand tools, arc/gas welding and lathe work. You will also
complete technical drawing by correspondence.
This three-month course introduces you to the vast array of military equipment and applies all the knowledge and skills that you have learnt. Once qualified, you will be posted to a workshop in Waiouru, Linton or Burnham and begin your apprenticeship training.
This eight week course introduces you to various welding techniques and aims towards a certification in 4711 and AS 1165.
This seven week course introduces you to specialist operational equipment, which includes boats, shower units, water purification, bridging and fuel dispensing units.
You will be posted to Trentham Military Camp for 18 months while you complete your initial trade training. After your 18 months of training, you will then be based at one of the Army's workshops, located at Waiouru, Linton or Burnham Camps where you will continue 'on-the-job training' and return to TTS for various trade courses until your apprenticeship is completed.
Primarily you will work within one of the Army's workshops providing maintenance support,with opportunities to work alongside other units.
