An Information Systems Operator is a part of the Royal New Zealand Army Corps of Signallers. You will find yourself working with a wide range of information systems technology from single user computers to powerful servers.

You will be part of a growing technical area within the Army, working with the latest software and hardware in one of New Zealand's largest computer networks. The trade is focused on the provision of information system support on the battlefield. This encompasses network servers, client computers and associated software and hardware.

Job on Camp:

Your day-to-day activities as an Information Systems Operator will see you installing and running operating systems on laptops, computers, servers, and networks. You will also learn how to set up and maintain the hardware and software required for local area networks, a vital part of the communications required to keep a modern Army functioning.

As well as your day to day responsibilities as an Information Systems Operator, you will also continue your soldier training including weapons, medical and radio/communications training.

Job on Deployment:

While on deployment as an Information Systems Operator, you could expect to work alongside other trades setting up command posts and overseas camp facilities ahead of main force arrival. RNZ Signals personnel can be found in small contingents around the globe in support of New Zealand's commitments. Within the RNZ Sigs you have a great opportunity for travelling and working overseas and experiencing different cultures.

The minimum remuneration you will be paid from enlistment is $31,894. Your remuneration will increase upon graduation of your recruit course to $40,646 and will continue to increase on promotion and seniority.

• You must be at least 17 years of age.

• You must be a NZ citizen (some exceptions apply).

• You must be of good character – assessed by a study of testimonials and a police record check.

• You must have completed at least three years at secondary school.

• A proven ability in English and Maths at NCEA Level 1(12 credits per subject) or equivalent.

• Industry and tertiary qualifications, whilst not a requirement, would certainly enhance your potential selection towards becoming an Information Systems Operator.

• You must be medically fit for service

• Depending on which higher qualifications you choose to undertake, the return of service can be up to two years.

• NOTE: Certified Network Engineer (LAN Manager) has a 24 month period of service.

Initially you will be posted to a Signals Squadron (Linton or Burnham). You will work there for the majority of your initial years in the Army. Qualified Information Systems Operators are employed throughout New Zealand including Auckland, Waiouru, Palmerston North, Wellington and Christchurch.
