The Role


Crewman are trained to operate and fight from within an armoured vehicle and trained in the skills of mounted reconnaissance. This involves working under pressure in a confined space, by day or night, in all weather conditions over varying terrain, anywhere in the world.

There are two different roles within the Crewman trade; Driver and Gunner.


JOB ON CAMP

As a Driver, you will be taught how to safely and efficiently operate the NZLAV in all kinds of conditions over all kinds of terrain. You will also learn basic maintenance, recovery and many other skills required to perform your role. A Gunner is primarily concerned with the operation of the turret. This entails the safe and effective operation of the 25mm cannon, the 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, and the various night-vision and other optical equipment used.


JOB ON DEPLOYMENT

Armoured Crewmen are deployed overseas whenever the need arises. This includes operational deployments as well as support to overseas exercises conducted in countries such as Australia and Singapore.


CAREER PROGRESSION

As your career progresses, you will train on the NZLAV as a Gunner, Driver and eventually a Crew Commander.

Pay & Benefit Details


The minimum remuneration you will be paid from enlistment is $31,894. Your remuneration will increase upon graduation of your recruit course to $40,646 and will continue to increase on promotion and seniority.

General Requirements


  • You must be at least 17 years of age.

  • You must be a NZ citizen (some exceptions apply).

  • You must be of good character – assessed by a study of testimonials and a police record check.

Educational Requirements


  • A proven ability in English and Mathematics with NCEA level 1 (8 credits per subject).

  • Class 1 Restricted Drivers License.

Fitness Requirements


  • You must be medically fit for service.

Training


Basic Training

Upon successful enlistment into the Army you will be posted to Waiouru Army base. Here you will do 16 weeks of basic military training to find out if you have what it takes to be in the Army, and learn various subjects including:

  • Organisation and Administration

  • Army Customs and Protocol

  • Drill and Parades

  • Military Field Skills and Weapon Training

  • First Aid

  • Physical Fitness 

Job Training

REGULAR FORCE INFANTRY CORPS TRAINING

Conducted at Burnham, this course is both physically and mentally challenging. It covers the essential basic trade competencies of Armoured and Infantry Soldiers. After Corps training, more advanced trade training and courses will be conducted in Waiouru at the Combat School.

Ongoing Training

NZLAV GUNNERS COURSE

This is will be one of the first courses you will complete in the Crewman trade. You will be taught the basics of gunnery, ballistics, vehicle recognition, how to use Thermal Imagery sighting systems and how to operate and maintain the 25mm LAV cannon and 7.62mm co-axial machine gun. Your training will be based on our state of the art NZLAV simulator and will culminate with live field firing.

Location Details


At the completion of Corps Training you will be posted to either 1st Battalion, RNZIR at Linton Military Camp or Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles at Burnham Military Camp.
