Our Role Abroad
We are regularly involved in New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) operations overseas. New Zealand personnel are currently serving on 18 peacekeeping operations, UN missions and defence exercises around the world, from Antarctica to Sudan, Timor-Leste to South Korea.
// TIMOR-LESTE
The largest deployment the Air Force was recently involved in is in Timor-Leste. Here, we were supporting New Zealand and Australian soldiers on the ground to help United Nations and local police create a safe environment for the Timorese people.
The last rotation of Air Force personnel deployed to Timor-Leste in July 2008 to operate two RNZAF Iroquois helicopters based near Dili. The two Iroquois and their three squadron crews were working alongside Australian Defence Force aviation assets already in Timor-Leste to transport patrols and provide aero medical evacuation and air logistic support.
// AFGHANISTAN
C130s continue to support NZDF personnel in Afghanistan with regular re-supply and redeployment flights into the region.
// UN SUPPORT
NZDF personnel support a large number of United nations (UN) operations around the world in places such as Sudan, Kosovo, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, East Timor, Korea and Afghanistan
// OTHER DEPLOYMENTS
The NZDF has a multitude of overseas posts including Diplomatic posts in Headquarters in Washington, London, Canberra, Singapore, Philippines and many more. There are also posts to assist non- UN operations in the Solomon Islands, Antarctica and the Middle East.
